Indexing – What Is It and Do I Need It?
The scenario that happens almost every time: a client has a new website, and everyone is excited, but they can't find it on Google! Not even on page five! Panic starts... Why is that?!? People ask in horror and disappointment...
So, Why Does This Happen?
It's not because your website is broken. And it's not because your designer forgot something. And it's definitely not because Google doesn't like you! It's simply because of indexing.
What Is Indexing?
Imagine Google as the world's biggest library.
And when you launch a new website, it's like publishing a brand-new book. But before anyone can find your book, the librarian (Google) has to:
- Discover your book.
- Read and understand it.
- And then add it to the library's catalogue — the index.
And only then can people search for it and find it.
So, if your website isn't indexed, Google doesn't know it exists. Simples! And even if it's live, no one can "check it out" until the librarian adds it to the shelves.
How Long Does Indexing Take?
It depends — but usually, a few days, a few weeks, but sometimes even months...
New websites, and especially those with brand-new domains, take longer because Google doesn't trust them yet. Well, why would they?
But we can help the librarian discover your book (your web) faster, read and understand it faster, and even index it quicker.
Here are a few things that can influence how fast your website gets indexed:
- How many other websites link to yours (backlinks)
- How often do you post new content
- If you've submitted your site manually to Google
- The structure and quality of your content
What Can You Do to Help Google Notice Your Website?
You can give the librarian a little nod...
1. Submit your site to Google Search Console
This is free and simple. Once your designer verifies your site, you can ask Google to crawl (discover your website) and index it faster.
2. Add your website link to your social media profiles
Sharing your link on Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn, or even sending it in emails, helps Google find it faster.
3. Keep your content fresh
When a website is done and live, it doesn't mean that's it. Forever... Posting new blogs and/or updating existing text from time to time is necessary. Our librarian, Google, loves websites that stay alive and active.
4. Make sure your SEO basics are in place
Page titles, descriptions, image alt text — all of that helps Google understand what your site is about.
(And if your website was created by me, don't worry! Indexing and all the basic SEO are already included in your package.)
5. Be patient
Indexing takes time, especially for new sites. If you've just launched — now let Google catch up.
Final Thoughts
So yes — you absolutely need indexing.
Without it, your website is invisible to search engines, no matter how beautiful it looks.
The good news? It's just a phase.
Once Google "notices" you, your site will start showing up in searches — and from there, your visibility only grows!
